The Hair Professional Standard Apprenticeship

Course overview

A Hairdressing Apprenticeship is one of the best ways to train to become a hairdresser. As an apprentice, you will be working in one of the many hairdressing salons that JET work with throughout Essex & the surrounding counties – gaining invaluable experience with clients and working in a team. Your salon will help with your training in many different ways- you will practice your skills and depending on your salon's preferred training options, you may attend one of JET's purpose built academies in either Basildon, Chelmsford, or Leigh-on-Sea, or your apprenticeship will be delivered at your own workplace salon. You should expect your apprenticeship to last 18-24 months. After an interview & initial assessment to determine your individual requirements, a learning plan will be created to meet your individual training needs. This will be agreed by you and your employer and a full induction to the apprenticeship programme will be given by one of our Training Co-ordinators.

The Hair Professional Standard

You will work with all hair types ranging from straight to very curly hair and carryout consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.  
You will develop skills in the following areas:
  • Consultation
  • Shampooing, conditioning & treating the hair & scalp
  • Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks including some restyles
  • Styling & finishing hair using a range of techniques to achieve a variety of looks including hair up looks and added hair.
  • Perming hair*
  • Hair Extension services*
  • Health & Safety across all units and current legislation
* Shows optional units- To be agreed with learner, salon and Jet to best fit needs.
You will also be given a real insight into the Hairdressing Industry to include what employers will expect from you how important it is to sustain your employment so you can progress even further in this exciting and creative career choice.

Training & Assessment

As an apprentice in Hairdressing, you have the opportunity to be assessed both in your place of work and at our academies. JET Hairdressing Academy has state-of-the-art facilities offering apprentices the opportunity to develop their skills through working on members of the public as well as through demonstrations, practical workshops, theory sessions & tutorials. You will be supported and encouraged throughout your apprenticeship and will receive quality teaching from highly trained, enthusiastic and qualified staff. Assessment will be continuous through oral, written and practical work to monitor your progress. Certification will be accredited on completion of your e-portfolio of evidence, achievement of Functional Skills (English & Maths) and Successful End Point Assessment.

End Point Assessment

Once you have completed your e-portfolio of evidence for each unit and achieved your Functional Skills*(if necessary), you will then be put forward for your End point assessment. The timing of this is agreed with you, your salon and Jet. The End Point Assessment will include a practical observation and oral questions around your skills, knowledge and understanding. This will then be graded Pass/Distinction. This will be assessed by a City & Guilds Independent Assessor.

Guidance and Support

JET Hairdressing Academy are recognised for providing outstanding support to their learners and if during your initial assessment we feel that you would benefit from additional help we will develop a support package to suit your individual needs.

Employment

As an apprentice, you will be employed at a salon working at least 30 hours per week (at least 16hrs for exceptional circumstances), earning the current apprenticeship wage (www.gov.uk). Your employer will provide you with a contract of employment and designate a salon supervisor to mentor and guide you through the apprenticeship programme whilst you are in the salon.

Qualification

On successful completion of your Hairdressing Apprenticeship you will have achieved the following:
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals
  • Functional Skills in English & Maths at Level 1 (depending on your GCSE results you may need to complete exams in English & Maths)
BEST OF ALL, you will be a competent junior stylist with a record of sustainable employment in thehairdressing industry, all of which will mean you are a highly valued asset to the hairdressing profession.

Progression

When you have completed your Hair Professional Apprenticeship you may wish to progress onto:
  • Level 3 Advance Apprenticeship in Hairdressing
  • Permanent employment as a Junior stylist or Hairdresser
  • Full time education

Funding

Apprenticeship programmes are fully funded for 16-18 year olds. If you are aged over 19 and up to 23 at the start of your apprenticeship, your salon will pay 10% of your training costs.
