Hair Council Student of the Year 2015: Winners Announced!
The two talented winners of the Hair Council Student of the Year competition, in association with L’Oreal Professional and VTCT, have been announced after a round of judging by Andrew Barton, Jamie Stevens and Patrick Cameron. Hairdressing students from across the country submitted photos of their work, with Level 2 students tasked with creating a red-carpet look and Level 3 following the brief of a cut and blow-dry.
Finalists were then invited to the L’Oreal academy in London to recreate their look in just 50 minutes, before interviews with a panel of experts about not just their work, but the work of the Hair Council.
The winners will now go on to spend a day with Andrew Barton at Urban Retreat in Harrods, enjoy an afternoon tea with the Hair Council at the House of Commons and a Wella course of their choice.
And the winners were…
Rebecca Mardon, JET Hairdressing
“The feeling of winning was amazing; when they said my name I honestly couldn’t believe it was me. The standard at the competition was so high it was unbelievable. I was speechless when I was announced; I just wanted to cry I was so happy!”
Demi Stainton, Grimsby Institute
“The talent during the day of the finals was so incredible. I was so happy to be a finalist and then shocked to be the winner! I was extremely emotional and collecting my award is a blur. I feel very honoured to have won such a prestigious award. Hair is my passion and I love what the Hair Council stands for – I hope one day it will be mandatory for every UK hairdresser to be state registered.”
Wella Professionals XPosure Competition 2015
Wella Professional held the XPosure competiton, celebrating creativity and skill within hairdressing colleges and academies. Talented students from all across the UK gathered at the Wella World Studio in London; to make it to the final they had to get through a photographic round and a live regional heat first. They were judged by some of the industry’s most respected names including Adam Harris from MG Hairdressing and Clinton James from Clinton James Salon. Also among the panel of judges was HJ’s deputy editor Matthew Batham who said:
“I am always hugely impressed by the standard of the competition and this year I think it was higher than ever. All 20 finalists should be very proud of their work.”
The 20 finalists battled it out for Gold, Sillver and Bronze places. The top prize included £1000 worth of education vouchers, a tool kit to the value of £500 and the chance to shadow a top hairdresser backstage at the UK final of Wella Trendvision.
The winners on the day were:
GOLD: Danielle Cooper, Jet Hairdressing Academy
SILVER: Gemma Jackson, Scissors, Poole
BRONZE: Shannon Devenney, Lanarkshire College
JET Hairdressing Academy are exceedingly proud of Danielle’s achievement!

There were more than 800 entries for this competition and after four regional finals in Edinburgh, Manchester, Nottingham and London the 36 finalists were chosen. Each finalist was required to submit a photographic entry in either the Young Talent or the New Color Vision Category. Reece Bullman from Chopp hair salon, Chalkwell, who completed his NVQ Level 2 and 3 Hairdressing and Barbering at JET Hairdressing Academy made it to the final in the Young Talent Category.
Reece and the other competitors attended the Final on Monday 5th October at the Roundhouse in Camden and won the Bronze award!
